Why are my volume buttons not working on my mac

If you check the Keyboard pane in System Preferences, you should see an option called Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys. I think you'll find it checked. There is a checkbox that says "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys". That should bring it back the way you want it. This was the answer that worked for me. None of the upper-row keys were working (volume, mute, brightness, etc). Independently of the "Fn" setting in the preferences, those keys were always working as normal Function keys.
